Billing and Coding Specialist Online Program

The Billing and Coding Specialist online program provides students with a Certificate of Completion following graduation. Students will gain a solid foundation in the critical skills needed in healthcare billing and coding practices. Successful graduates will be well-prepared to enter into an entry-level healthcare field in the medical setting for both physician-based and hospital/facility billing and coding. Graduates of the program will be provided with technological competencies, interpersonal strategies, and understanding of the value and importance of correct billing and coding to be a successful professional in the field. They will be prepared to take Practice Management Institute's examination for either the Certified Medical Coder (CMC) or the Certified Medical Insurance Specialist (CMIS).

This course is designed to introduce the student to the basics of medical insurance, including medical terminology, human anatomy, government programs, and general insurance procedures. Upon completion of this curriculum, the student will be able to successfully:

Prerequisites: High school diploma or GED, in addition to basic computer knowledge.

Required Text:
A textbook list will be issued after all required paperwork is completed and the registration fee paid. 

Course Descriptions:

MBC 120    Medical Terminology for Coding         12 lessons

This course will provide students with a foundation to recognize medical terms using the four word part approach (prefixes, word roots,

suffixes, combining vowels). The student will learn and master the terminology common to diseases, diagnoses and treatment within the

medical field as related to health care delivery. Prerequisite:  None.

 

MBC 130   Anatomy & Physiology for Coding      12 lessons

This course provides understanding and organization of the human body with emphasis on the clinical and pathological conditions of all

body systems. Students will learn the vocabulary of medical terminology as it relates to anatomy and physiology of the body. The dialogue with

the physician and other medical staff using proper terminology is explored, especially as it will relate to the work in billing and coding.

Prerequisite:  None.

 

MBC 140   Billing & Coding Introduction               16 lessons

This course provides the student with in depth ICD-9-CM, CPT and HCPCS coding instruction. Reimbursement issues and coding for medical

necessity are included. Students will gain extensive practice using coding books to classify diagnosis and procedures in the medical settings.

Prerequisite:  MBC120 or MBC130 or equivalent courses.

 

MBC 150   Advance Billing & Coding                      16 lessons

This is an advance course continuing with the study of billing and coding processes in the physician and hospital/facility medical setting utilizing

 ICD-9-CM, CPT, HCPCS and DRG coding systems. Students will also learn about medical ethics, coding compliance and guidelines as it

relates to coding for medical necessity. Prerequisite:  MBC120, MBC130 or equivalent courses.

 

MBC 170   Electronic Claims Processing                8 lessons 

This course provides students the working knowledge needed for electronic claims processing and Electronic Health Records. The student will

learn the preparation of electronic commercial insurance and government claims forms along with instructions and billing experience in private and government insurance carriers such as:  Medicare/Medicaid, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, PPO's, HMO's, and Worker's Compensation.

Prerequisite:  MBC120, MBC130 or equivalent courses.

 

Certification

A certification exam for Certified Medical Insurance Specialist or Certified Medical Coder (CMC)  is made available to those students who have

achieved a minimum score of 70% in all required modules. More details will be available prior to registering for examination.
